Through a combination of hands-on activities and laboratory experiments, we will investigate the structure of DNA, techniques for DNA engineering, and the transformation of genetic material into host organisms to modify their biology. Possible projects include transforming a jellyfish gene into bacteria and testing foods from the grocery store for the presence of transgenes. Participants will have the opportunity to focus on a topic of their choice for group presentations at the end of the week. Here is your chance to explore the science behind the news headlines! Prior completion of high school biology or equivalent experience is strongly recommended. Students with some prior exposure to cellular biology are more likely to find the program rewarding. To get the most out of this course it is recommended that you have completed at least one high school biology course.
